Ingredients:

For the Cream Cheese Filling:

  • 250 g cream cheese
  • 50 g sugar
  • 2 tbsp finely grated orange zest
  • 3 tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 large egg

For the Chocolate Batter:

  • 250 g dark chocolate, broken into pieces
  • 60 g butter
  • 150 g sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten with 2 tbsp cold water
  • 75 g all-purpose flour

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and line a deep 23 cm (9-inch) square baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. To make the cream cheese filling: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar together on high speed with a mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in the orange zest, juice, and cornstarch. Beat in the egg until just combined.
  3. To make the chocolate batter: Melt the chocolate and butter in a double boiler. Let cool slightly. Whisk in the sugar and vanilla. Whisk in the beaten eggs, then whisk in the flour.
  4. Pour the chocolate batter into the prepared pan. Pour the cream cheese filling over the chocolate batter, using a tablespoon.
  5. To create the marble pattern: Use a metal spatula to swirl the two batters together in a few places.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cake is slightly risen around the edges and set in the center. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan. Cut into squares to serve.

  • Add 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or almonds to the chocolate batter.
  • Add 1/2 cup of blueberries or raspberries to the cream cheese filling.
  • Substitute lemon zest and juice for the orange zest and juice.
